Hybrid / Atienza Kali
Hybrid Martial Arts Academy is South Florida's Premier Training Facility for Atienza Kali.

The Atienza Kali system was developed on the tough streets of Jamaica, Queens New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. During this time, ambushes by multiple attackers was a very common occurrence. The Atienza family trained not for sport or competition, but to simply deal with the attacks they witnessed or were subject to on a regular basis in their neighborhood.

Atienza Kali curriculum is founded upon the use of the long-blade, such as a sword or a Bolo. The system also covers smaller blades such as knives and daggers. The aim is to instruct the student in how to utilize the blade as a tool to aid with the protection of the family. Training is focused on Multiple Attacker scenarios as well as fighting in a team setting.

The purpose of the Atienza Kali Training Components is to ready the Atienza Kali Practitioner (AKP) for a real combat encounter. Each component plays a specific role in readying the AKP for combat. Utilizing only one of these components, without the others, will not ready an individual for combat. All the Atienza Kali Training Components, interacting together, are important for achieving that goal.

A BREIF HISTORY OF ATIENZA KALI

Atienza Kali is a Filipino martial art that was developed here in the United States on the mean streets of Jamaica, Queens in New York City. The system is rooted with the teachings of the late Manong Edgar “Butch” Atienza, a renowned Filipino martial arts practitioner in the New York City area. Manong Butch taught the art to his three sons: Allain (Bong) Atienza, Carl Atienza, and Darryl Atienza. In those days, the Atienza family did not train in the art for sport or recreation. Rather, their primary directive was to train in order to survive the violent nature of the street altercations they encountered on a regular basis. The methods of Atienza Kali were born in an environment where facing armed multiple attackers on the street was a regular occurrence in their neighborhood.
